Has Anas Sarwar found some backbone? Having been doing a first rate impression of being Starmer's poodle, he has now broken ranks with UK Labour Ministers and called for Starmer to stand down, citing the good of Scotland as his motivation. Believe that if you will. Personally, I think that it is a desperate gamble designed to show the voters of Scotland that he has their best interests at heart. That’s probably a tough sell given all the backing he’s given to UK Labour since they were elected into power at Westminster, and I doubt that wrapping himself in a Saltire will be enough.

The problem for Anas Sarwar is that this gamble could see him being removed as Scottish Branch Office Manager. If Sir Keir (Knight of the Realm) Starmer survives, he’s not going to want a disloyal Branch Office Manager, and I suspect he will engineer a replacement once he feels strong enough.

But what if Starmer is forced out? Wil Anas Sarwar be secure? Wil his ploy result in voters returning to Labour in droves? I’m not so sure. Some will certainly be pleased at getting rid of a particularly inept Prime Minister, but much will depend on who his replacement might be. And will any of them want an independently-minded Scottish Branch Office Manager? Oops. I just referred to Anas Sarwar as independently-minded. Independence for Scotland is, of course, the last thing he wants. Still, my description is possibly more accurate than the bizarre one I saw in the mainstream media yesterday where he was referred to as a senior Labour figure, a rather bizarre description after the years during which they have either ignored or belittled him.

Still, it’s amusing to see Mr Sarwar stand up to his London masters for once. Whether it will do him any good remains to be seen.

Speaking of independence, I note that Your Party have decided that they are to be a pro-independence party. I hope readers will forgive me for taking a cynical view of this announcement. There are already plenty of Unionist parties standing in the Holyrood election, so Your Party risk diluting the Unionist vote if they stand against Scotland becoming a normal, self-governing country. They can read the polls as well as anyone, and know that most Scottish voters will support a pro-Indy Party, so are probably hoping to grab votes from the SNP and Greens. All that will do is dilute the pro-Indy vote, allowing more opportunity for Unionist parties to pick up seats. Any Yesser thinking of voting for Your Party should think very carefully about the consequences. Let's not forget that Your Party came out of Jeremy Corbyn's wing of Labour. Only a few years ago, Corbyn was strongly against Scotland becoming a normal, self-governing country. I suppose he may have changed his mind, but given Labour's propensity for lying to the people of Scotland, I'm taking this announcement of support for Scotland's independence with a very large pinch of salt.
